Severe Weather Triggers Floods and Ice Hazards Across Sweden

Published: 2024-02-17

Sweden is grappling with severe weather conditions as heavy rain and snowmelt trigger widespread flooding and create hazardous icy conditions.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued multiple weather warnings, including three orange alerts for significant flooding and high water flow in areas around Svartån in Mjölby, Almaån outside Hässleholm, and Motala ström from Glan down to Norrköping.

In addition, a yellow warning for high water flow has been issued for northern Stockholm County and around Lake Vänern, where local flooding is expected.

Northern regions are facing heavy snowfall, which could accumulate up to 15 centimeters, complicating road conditions and hampering traffic.

Temperatures dropping overnight pose a risk of sudden ice formation, particularly in northwestern Götaland, western Svealand, and southeastern Norrland.

The situation is exacerbated in Östergötland, where water levels in lakes Roxen and Glan have reached their highest in two decades, leading to upgraded orange warnings for additional rivers and potential disruptions to train services.
