Scandal Rocks Youth Home Amid Calls for Closure

Published: 2024-03-01

A series of troubling events at Tysslinge, a high-security youth home in Södertälje, has drawn intense scrutiny from the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo).

An internal report, hidden from public view and the agency's general director, suggested shutting down the facility due to severe mismanagement and safety concerns.

This recommendation came days after Ivo warned of the imminent risk of someone being killed at the institution.

Furthermore, recent inspections have revealed that youths were allowed to maintain a lax regimen, including keeping their phones and sleeping for extended periods, with instances of sexual activities occurring in front of staff.

In response to Ivo's oversight, Tysslinge has initiated corrective measures, such as a "sleep school," to stabilize the situation.
