Red Alert for Historic Flooding in Skåne

Published: 2024-01-25

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued a red warning for extreme flooding along the Kävlingeån river in Skåne, Southern Sweden.

This highest-level alert signals the potential for significant flooding due to a combination of snowmelt and heavy rainfall, which is causing water levels to rise rapidly.

The Kävlingeån, stretching from Vombsjön to its outlet at the coast in Bjärred, is expected to experience water flows not seen more than once every 50 years.

The warning remains in effect indefinitely, with additional rainfall anticipated to exacerbate the situation.

Surrounding areas are on high alert as the rising waters threaten to inundate roads and buildings, posing substantial risks to local communities.
