Record Heatwave Sweeps Southern Sweden

Published: 2024-09-07

Southern Sweden is experiencing an unprecedented heatwave this September, with temperatures soaring to record highs.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued warnings for high temperatures across Götaland and parts of Svealand, as the mercury hit 31.1 degrees Celsius in Helsingborg, breaking the previous record from 1975. Meteorologists highlight the unusual nature of this prolonged heat, which poses health risks, especially to vulnerable groups such as the chronically ill and young children.

While the weekend promises more of this summer-like weather, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees in areas like Mälardalen and the west coast, a shift is expected next week.

Cooler, more typical September weather is forecasted to return, bringing relief from the heat.

This extreme weather pattern aligns with global warming trends, suggesting more frequent heatwaves in the future.
