Protests in Gothenburg: A 100-Day Stand

Published: 2024-09-21

In Gothenburg, Sweden, a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators has maintained a protest camp outside the university for over 100 days, opposing Israel's military actions in Gaza.

Unlike similar camps in other Swedish cities, this one remains due to the city's ongoing assessments with the police, which have not yet warranted intervention.

The protest has sparked a broader debate about antisemitism in the city, with some local leaders and historians expressing concern over the potential rise in anti-Jewish sentiment.

Despite these tensions, the protestors, led by students, assert a strict stance against antisemitism, emphasizing their focus on political criticism of Israel.

Meanwhile, the city is considering new security measures to protect its Jewish community, reflecting a national increase in antisemitic incidents since October 2023.
