Pothole Peril: Motorist's Shock and Costs

Published: 2024-02-01

The onset of spring often brings with it a surge in potholes, which are deep craters in the road surface, presenting hazards for motorists.

Thomas van Manen experienced this firsthand when his vehicle was severely damaged by a pothole on Tjorn, resulting in a shocking encounter and unexpected expenses exceeding 5,000 kronor for deductibles and car hire.

Potholes typically form due to poor drainage and road maintenance, especially during winter when fluctuating temperatures around freezing cause water to seep into cracks, freeze, and expand, breaking the pavement apart.

Summer can also see pothole formation when standing water in road imperfections, combined with traffic, leads to further deterioration.

The lack of timely repairs and warnings from road authorities has left van Manen and other drivers disappointed and facing costly repairs.

Legal advice suggests documenting any damage immediately using a mobile phone for potential compensation claims.
