MV Ruby: A Floating Test of Tensions

Published: 2024-09-21

The MV Ruby, a cargo ship loaded with 20,000 tons of Russian ammonium nitrate, has become a focal point in discussions about Russia's potential hybrid warfare tactics against Western nations.

According to Danish security expert Jacob Kaarsbo, the ship's journey through Nordic waters may be a strategic move to test and intimidate these countries.

The Ruby, owned by Syrians through a Lebanese holding company, ran aground in Norwegian waters and is now being towed towards Klaipeda, Lithuania.

Despite the potentially dangerous cargo, Swedish authorities do not perceive the Ruby as a significant threat, noting that the ammonium nitrate is stable unless exposed to extreme conditions.

The ship's route, which includes passage through Danish waters, has raised suspicions, with calls for NATO collaboration to monitor such activities.

The final destination of the Ruby remains uncertain as it awaits repairs.
