Mild Earthquake Shakes East Coast, No Injuries Reported

Published: 2024-04-05

A mild earthquake struck the East Coast of the United States on Friday, registering a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale at 4:25 PM Swedish time.

Residents from New York reported hearing loud booming sounds and feeling the ground shake beneath their feet, though the New York Fire Department has confirmed that no injuries have been reported.

Despite the quake's relatively low magnitude, which is unlikely to cause significant damage, it was felt across several states, from Philadelphia to Boston.

Following the event, several East Coast airports suspended flights, and New York City's Mayor Eric Adams advised the public to be prepared for possible aftershocks but encouraged citizens to continue their day as usual.

The last similar earthquake to strike the East Coast occurred in 2011, with a magnitude of 5.9.
