A man in Sweden has filed a complaint with the Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) after being dismissed from his job on the first day for refusing to shake hands with female colleagues.
The incident occurred at Härryda municipality's home care services, where the man cited his Muslim faith as the reason for not shaking hands with women, except for close family members.
The employer argued that the refusal to shake hands was perceived as discriminatory by female employees and raised concerns about the man's ability to perform his duties, which may require physical contact.
The municipality stated that all employees are expected to greet each other regardless of gender.
The DO is currently investigating the case, and if discrimination is found, the municipality may face penalties.
The case highlights ongoing debates about religious practices and workplace policies in Sweden.
