Luleå Prioritizes Housing for Abused Women

Published: 2024-09-08

In 2023, Luleå, along with 58 other Swedish municipalities, began offering priority in housing queues for women affected by domestic violence.

This initiative, proposed by the Green Party, aims to help these women secure independent housing more quickly.

However, the Riksorganisationen för kvinno- och tjejjourer (Roks) warns that stringent economic requirements may exclude the most vulnerable women, who often face financial abuse.

To qualify for priority, women must meet several conditions, including being debt-free and proving a stable income.

Despite these challenges, Luleå's social services offer support through economic assistance and social contracts to help women leave abusive situations.

This move is seen as a crucial step in addressing domestic violence, although more flexible criteria are needed to support all affected women.
