Local Nitrous Oxide Bans Spark Debate

Published: 2024-10-07

In Sweden, the misuse of nitrous oxide is prompting local governments to take action.

In Nyköping, hundreds of empty nitrous oxide canisters have been found at Långbergsskolan, leading to calls for stricter regulations.

The local council had previously established nitrous oxide-free zones, but the problem seems to have shifted rather than diminished.

Urban Granström, the council's chairman, suggests expanding these zones to address the issue.

Meanwhile, in Uppsala, a motion by the Moderates proposes banning nitrous oxide use in public and school areas.

While some see this as a necessary step, others, like Erik Pelling, argue that a national ban is needed for real impact.

This local action follows similar measures in other Swedish municipalities, highlighting a growing concern over nitrous oxide misuse.
