Kiruna's Iconic Church to Be Relocated Amid Mining Concerns

Published: 2024-02-27

Kiruna, a town in northern Sweden, is embarking on an extraordinary project to move its iconic church five kilometers to a new location, due to ground fractures caused by nearby mining activities.

The monumental task, set for the summer of 2025, involves widening a five-kilometer path and demolishing a viaduct to accommodate the 40-meter high and wide building.

Preparations have been underway since 2020, with significant impacts on local infrastructure, including road closures and modifications.

This relocation effort not only aims to preserve the church, a cultural heritage site voted Sweden's most beautiful building pre-1950, but also to ensure the safety of its cherished artifacts, including Prince Eugen's irreplaceable altarpiece.

Amid these extensive preparations, the phenomenon has attracted a continuous stream of curious tourists.
