Two imams from the Gothenburg mosque have been dismissed following an internal investigation after a prayer was held for Ismail Haniyeh, the deceased leader of Hamas, during a Friday prayer service.
The mosque stated that the prayer was conducted at the request of some visitors, and the imam believed everyone deserves a final prayer.
However, the mosque's leadership deemed the decision "theologically correct but inappropriate" given Haniyeh's controversial status.
Social Minister Jacob Forssmed expressed concern over the incident, stating that extremism has no place in religious environments.
The mosque has announced that all imams will undergo further training to prevent similar situations in the future.
