Healthcare Sees Shift After Record Staffing Costs

Published: 2024-04-11

In a pronounced shift within healthcare, regions are witnessing a potential trend reversal in the reliance on temporary staffing, following a shocking budget deficit that peaked with a record-high bill of 773 million kronor last year for hiring healthcare personnel.

This burgeoning problem, which has seen a staggering 550% increase in costs since 2012 in Västernorrland, prompted regional leaders to take decisive action.

Early figures this year suggest a significant reduction in the use of hired staff, meeting a set target of a 20% cost decrease in just two months.

A collaborative effort across the country's regions, including a joint procurement agreement and tougher scheduling for temporary staff, while improving conditions for permanent employees, appears to be a pivotal factor in this turnaround.
