Flooding Crisis Hits Central Kävlinge

Published: 2024-01-26

The Koloniområdet region near Kävlingeån in central Kävlinge, Sweden, is experiencing significant flooding, with large areas submerged underwater.

This situation has been exacerbated by increased water discharges from Lake Vombsjön, aimed at preventing a dam from breaking.

A red alert for high water flow in Kävlingeån remains in effect, and the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) forecasts more rainfall, which could further aggravate the situation.

Efforts to manage the emergency include increased discharges from Lake Vombsjön to avoid a potential dam failure, while snowmelt and rain have already caused water levels to rise sharply.

In addition to the red warning for Kävlingeån, an orange warning for flooding from Lake Vombsjön downstream towards Kävlinge has been issued.

Local authorities are holding meetings with affected municipalities, with more rain expected throughout the region.

Meteorologist Marie Staerk from SMHI predicts between 15 to 30 millimeters of rain locally, followed by a stabilization of weather conditions starting Saturday.
