Fake Zombie Hand Causes Stir at Swedish Recycling Center

Published: 2024-02-19

In an unexpected twist at Degermyrans recycling center in Skellefteå, Sweden, a supposed human hand, which caused a stir among the staff and prompted a police investigation, turned out to be a fake.

The hand, discovered in a jar last week, initially appeared to be a chilling find amidst the recyclables.

However, it was eventually revealed to be a prop made of latex and popsicle sticks, designed to resemble a zombie hand.

The creator of the hand, Magnus Sjöström, and the individual who donated it, Michael Wågebrand, chairman of the youth organization Aktiv Ungdom in Skellefteå, shared the backstory of the hand, explaining it was crafted 15 years ago for role-playing games.

The prop, modeled after a real hand casting, was forgotten in a cabinet during the clearing of the organization's premises in anticipation of a move.

Upon its rediscovery, Wågebrand decided it was time for the hand to find a new home at the recycling center, not anticipating the alarm it would cause.

Police were called in when the frozen prop thawed, revealing what was mistaken for a human hand.

The misunderstanding was cleared up after Wågebrand contacted the authorities to explain the hand's origins.

Both Sjöström and Wågebrand found humor in the situation, with Sjöström expressing interest in reclaiming the now-famous prop.
