EU Strikes Historic but Controversial Migration Pact

Published: 2023-12-24

After seven years of deliberation, the European Union has reached a historic agreement on its migration policy.

The deal, which will be formally decided early next year, is being viewed with skepticism due to its potential practical implementation issues.

Migration to Europe has been a divisive issue, threatening to tear the EU apart.

Countries like Hungary and Poland have fiercely resisted being forced to accept asylum seekers during the major refugee crisis.

Under the new pact, there is no mandatory redistribution of migrants.

Instead, each country can choose to accept asylum seekers or pay to opt out.

The agreement also strengthens control at the EU's external border, aiming to quickly separate those with potential asylum reasons from those seeking a better life but without the need for protection.

However, the fundamental problem remains: many more people want to come to Europe than the continent is willing to accept.
