EU Sets Aggressive 2040 Climate Goal Amid Protests

Published: 2024-02-06

The European Union has set a new interim climate target, aiming for a 90% reduction in emissions by 2040 compared to 1990 levels.

This ambitious goal is part of the EU's strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The announcement comes amidst protests across Europe from farmers concerned about unfair competition and stringent climate legislation.

In response to these protests, the EU Commission has promised to make adjustments, including retracting a proposal to cut pesticide use in half by 2023. Despite the new targets, some critics argue for even more aggressive goals, with calls for a 95% reduction by 2040. Leaked documents suggest that the Commission had considered more drastic measures such as banning fossil fuel subsidies and reducing methane emissions from agriculture.

The new climate targets are expected to influence the upcoming EU elections, with fringe parties making climate policy their main agenda and likely gaining traction.
