Late Friday evening, Earth was hit by the most powerful solar storm in over 20 years, resulting in flickering lights and vibrant auroras visible from Tasmania to the British Isles.
Termed an "extreme" geomagnetic storm by the U.
S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it marks the first of its kind since the "Halloween Storm" of 2003. Originating from a solar flare, this cascade of charged particles disrupted Earth's magnetic field, with shockwaves arriving in at least seven waves.
The effects are expected to impact Earth's magnetic field throughout the weekend.
