Denied Elk Cull Request Sparks Debate in Åre

Published: 2024-04-16

In Bratteggen, Åre, a farmer's plea for permission to cull elk, which consumed the winter feed of his cattle, was denied by the county administrative board.

The board argued that increasing the general elk hunt quota during the regular hunting season is a more sustainable solution than culling individual animals.

They believe that this approach, along with preventative measures like higher fencing, will better address the issue.

The decision comes despite the elk causing significant damage, with 48 elk consuming nearly $36,000 worth of cattle feed this winter.

The county board suggests that the risk of further damage is low, anticipating the end of the elk's "hunger period" as the vegetation season approaches.
