In a significant ruling, the Svea Court of Appeal has upheld the conviction of two security guards for causing the death of Juha Hynninen during a subway incident in Stockholm in July 2022. The guards, aged 26 and 32, were sentenced to conditional imprisonment and fines after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
The incident occurred when the guards restrained Hynninen, who was reportedly aggressive and violent, using a chokehold and pressure on his back, leading to his death by asphyxiation.
Despite their claims of self-defense, the court maintained the original verdict from the Stockholm District Court.
The case highlights the critical need for proper training for security personnel authorized to use force, as emphasized by human rights advocates.
