Controversy Over Sweden's Proposed Search Zones

Published: 2024-02-08

The Swedish government, in collaboration with the Sweden Democrats, has proposed the creation of 'visitationszoner' or search zones, permitting the police to conduct body searches and vehicle inspections without specific suspicions of a crime.

However, a significant controversy has arisen over the stipulation that clothing style, such as wearing a 'Guccikeps', could justify a search, leading to accusations of potential ethnic discrimination and an erosion of trust between police and citizens.

Critics, including the Swedish Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) and Civil Rights Defenders, warn that the policy could violate rights and lead to arbitrary enforcement.

Political figures like Social Democrat Ardalan Shekarabi and Center Party leader Muharrem Demirok have expressed concerns over the proposal's impact on legal security and the risk of arbitrary police actions.

Amidst this debate, former Bar Association secretary-general Anne Ramberg drew heavy criticism for a controversial comparison between the police proposal and the persecution symbolized by the Star of David, a comparison she later retracted.
