Confusion Over New Garden Waste Burning Regulations

Published: 2024-04-18

Across Sweden, the new rules on the burning of garden waste, which came into effect on January 1st, have sparked confusion and concern among municipalities and residents alike.

Climate and Environmental Minister Romina Pourmokhtari emphasizes that the intention was not to significantly alter the possibilities for burning garden waste, urging municipalities to apply the rules without causing unnecessary trouble for the public.

The regulations, stemming from an EU directive aimed at increasing recycling of bio-waste, allow burning in exceptional cases with municipal permission, leading to varied interpretations across different regions.

Some municipalities have even reversed decisions to ban garden waste burning, while others grant dispensations for those living far from waste stations.

The government is now working on clarifications to the waste ordinance to prevent misunderstandings, ensuring that public bonfires can continue with special permits.
