Climate Council Critique Stirs Political Controversy

Published: 2024-03-21

The Climate Policy Council's critique of the government's climate policy has sparked significant political debate, with the council warning that the government might violate the climate law and fail to meet its climate goals.

This criticism has been perceived as a challenge to the government, particularly troubling for the Tidöpartierna coalition, as summarized by SVT's domestic political commentator Elisabeth Marmorstein.

In response, the Sweden Democrats (SD), through their climate policy spokesperson Martin Kinnunen, have labeled the council's conclusions as politicized and questioned the utility of the council's annual report.

The SD is calling for a broader mandate for the council, arguing that the critique risks being seen as politically motivated rather than constructive.
