Åkesson Faces Criticism Over Antisemitism

Published: 2024-10-16

Jimmie Åkesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats (SD), is under fire from the Swedish Committee Against Antisemitism (SKMA) for alleged antisemitic expressions within his party.

The committee has pointed out several SD members, including prominent figures like Björn Söder and Richard Jomshof, for their controversial remarks.

Åkesson, however, dismisses these claims as misunderstandings of SD's policies, asserting that his party is the most pro-Israel in the Swedish parliament.

During a televised debate, Åkesson accused the Left Party of having significant antisemitism issues, which was strongly denied by their leader, Nooshi Dadgostar.

Despite Åkesson's claims of SD's efforts to combat antisemitism, critics highlight the party's historical roots in far-right ideologies.

The debate continues as both parties face scrutiny over their handling of antisemitism within their ranks.
