Region Östergötland in Sweden has announced a major job cut, affecting 900 employees, including potentially nurses aides and psychiatric attendants.
This decision, attributed to the need to save 1.1 billion SEK, does not impact doctors or nurses.
Opposition voices, including former regional council chair Kaisa Karro, argue that the large scale of the layoffs could have been avoided.
They suggest that prior actions against costly privatizations and better control over private healthcare providers could have mitigated the need for such drastic measures.
The region, which employs about 14,600 people, faces a financial shortfall of 1.7 billion SEK.
